Things To Be Thankful For and How Develop An Attitude Of Gratitude

"Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation." ~ Brain Tracy

Being in the USA around Thanksgiving has taught me a lot about the importance of taking time for reflection and gratitude for the people (and animals) in your life, for what you have, for what you do and for the beauty that surrounds you.

How often do you do this in your life?

You know, appreciation is not just an annual event. It is a conscious state of mind and the more gratitude we have the more we receive. It is a Universal Law!

Test it out for yourself, you will be surprised!

Showing appreciation is such a simple thing to do and can mean so much to the person on the receiving end. Appreciation is such an important motivator for us yet in the hustle and bustle of busy life we forget to pause to take a moment to be grateful and communicate our appreciation for those around us.

It is not about promotions and pay rises, these are extrinsic and soon forgotten. Appreciation is about demonstrating that you care. Make it a regular practice, as you go through your daily life.

Here is what gratitude is all about.

If you look back through your life it is those people who believed in you, made you feel special, or have helped you grow and learn.

Mrs. May, my primary school Headmistress was my first role model. She touched my life briefly for 4 years, when I was 5 - 9 years old. She genuinely cared for her pupils and made us feel appreciated and special from day one. She only touched my life briefly, but in those moments, she gave me confidence to navigate through my primary school years. I will never forget her.

Why not make appreciation a habit?

Having a daily ritual of reflection is a great way to create a habit of appreciation. My coach taught me this:

Every evening before I go to bed I write down at least five things: These are people, things, animals or experiences that I am grateful for. I stop to pause and be thankful for how each one touched my life that day and how they have enriched my life.

This practice reminds me to communicate my genuine appreciation to others by sending an email, a card, some flowers, making a donation or taking time to phone someone to say thank you.

It is a great habit to practice each day!

Take a moment today to consider what you are grateful for. As Albert Schweitzer says, it's all about lighting the flame within us and sharing its warmth.

We can help and support each other every day.

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us." ~ Albert Schweitzer

Positive Thinking Leads to Positive Attitude

Positive attitude can work wonders and turn impossible things into possible. Basically, it is the seed that is essential to sow if we want to reap success. It is positive attitude again that waters and feeds the sapling of positive traits. It's only positive thoughts that activate the positive world around us and brings us the positive results. It changes our entire perception of looking at things.

Our mind drives a train of thoughts, that if we do not fuel up with positive thoughts, is surely going to a dark long tunnel, eventually leading to a dark jungle of negative thoughts, We are in charge of these thoughts, having two advisors at our back, one that tells us negative things and the other that pushes us to positive traits. As soon as we come up with any idea, both the advisors get active and begin their work, now it is up to us that who do we listen to, following negative thoughts makes our attitude negative and following positive thoughts makes it positive.

That is where we make the decision as to who is going to control our train of thoughts.

Factors That Build Our Attitude:

There is a common saying that a balloon when released goes up not because of its color or shape, it is what is inside makes it go up. Same is the case with our lives , what we carry inside us is what makes us who we are, and the thing that makes us keep going and achieve our goals is our positive attitude. Environment, education and our experience determine our attitude, it is natural for us to perform positively in positive environment and vice versa in the negative environment, and education shapes the thoughts and puts them in action. Then there are traits that differentiate people, at one hand positive people are caring, confident, patient and humble , on the other hand negative people face hard times dealing with relationships, friendships and their jobs. This behavior then passes on to the coming generations as well. Therefore it is important for us to dust up the negative thoughts, get back into our mainstream, put our dreams together and move forward, thinking about all the positive things is surely going to put us in positive state of mind.

Understanding Right from Wrong:

Sometimes we have to dig deep to look for the positive happenings around us, it may not be apparent, as there is a saying that even a stop clock shows right time twice a day. There are many things that come into play with our attitude towards life, as a task completed on time makes us energetic and confident enough to move on, similarly a failed task dents our entire personality. Looking at our blessings instead of our troubles keeps us focused, remember there are a lot of things to be thankful for. Self esteem is the way we feel about ourselves, when we feel positive, everything around us becomes pleasant, and performing well is directly proportional to how we feel inside. Helping others is a great way to polish our self esteem, as the way to be happy is to makes others happy. When we feel good within , we get surrounded by positive energy around us , which makes other things go positively, eventually it's all about the attitude we carry, it yourself, who has to decide which side you are on, one's who complain about life or the ones who go through hardships to make their way.

Role of Our Society:

Our society plays a major role in our build up, we are surrounded by all kinds of people, and there will be people who will throw stones in your way, we have to recognize the right from the wrong, we are just known by the company we keep, but also by the company we avoid.

We should start by doing what is necessary and keep a habit of doing things at the right time, only after that we will be able to look at this positively, consistently.

Positive attitude is all about seeing hope, a mental trait of seeing light in the darkness, it depends on your attitude that what side of life you witness, you can never walk out on your own story, there is an intimate link between success and positive attitude. So every day when we wake up, we should put all our troubles in a pocket with a hole in it , and head in the direction of development, direction of our dreams.
